25 Lessons for 25 Years

Another summer is officially over and with it comes a feeling of closure and reflection. I'm ready to put it behind me and move on to the next one.

For your reading pleasure {and for selfish therapeutic reasons} here are 25 lessons I've learned in my 25 years on Earth.

1) You are you. You are not your best friend. You are not your enemy. You are not the girl you work with. Stop trying to be someone else and embrace what God has blessed you with.

2) Don't stop looking for things you are passionate about. And when you do find them, go balls to the wall!

3) Quality over quantity. Always. This rings true when it comes to men, jewelry, mixed drinks, sets of sheets, friends, clothes, and calories.

4) Mom is right more often than you want to admit. Just go ahead and give in. You'll be the right mom 30 years down the road.

5) Think about just how HUGE this world is. Think of all the people, all of the animals, all of the plants, all of the hurt, all of the suffering, and all of the joy. Rather than feel insignificant, just know that you are meant to be where you are and you're doing just fine.

6) Everything happens for a reason. Trust in this.

7) Keep moving - you'll have time to be a slug later in life. For now, get off the couch, go for a bike ride, join your man on a motorcycle ride, and stay active! Your body will thank you.

8) Nobody owes you anything. Don't act like you're entitled to anything. If you work hard and be kind, things will play out just fine.

9) Comparison really is the thief of joy. So try not to be too jealous of the girl with always perfect hair or the long legs - you're not doing yourself any favors thinking like that.

10) Finding a pair of jeans that fits perfectly is next to impossible. Don't give up trying but also don't be surprised when this same thing pops up on your "50 Lessons for 50 Years" list...

11) Tell your loved ones that you love them. Spend time with them and cherish those moments. Who knows, they may be around for years upon years but in the tragic situation that they aren't you don't want to have any regrets.

12) And on the same token, soak up as much knowledge from your mom as you can. One day in the {hopefully} distant future, she'll be gone and you won't be able to ask her the name of your first pet, why home improvements take sixteen times longer than anticipated, or what to do with all the zucchini in your garden. Gather as much parenting advice as you can because - let's face it - you're going to need it when that time rolls around and she has 25 years on you. Heck, she kept you alive for the first 18 years of your life so she's got to know something about parenting...

13) Continue your adventure. Don't forget to include your husband -he'd be pretty ticked if you took off to Jamaica without him.

14) Drink more water. Eat more vegetables. Get more sleep. Basically, just take care of your body. After all, it's the only one you've got!

15) Be real. You don't need fake eyelashes. Or a chevron pillow. Or that weird fuzzy nail polish. That stuff isn't you. Screw the fads!

16) You are beautiful. Yes, even when you look in the mirror and only see your chubby cheeks, your flat hair, and your bigger-than-average thighs. You can thank your Oma for that - she is in you and her legacy will live on for generations to come.

17) Your kind heart will move mountains. Think of the lives you've touched, the patients you've cared for, and the families you've helped. You've improved their quality of life, you've answered hard questions, and you've been empathetic to their situations. They thank you.

18) Sitting with a patient or their family and crying along side them is never wrong. The lady in 204 may not understand why her 9:00 am pill doesn't come until 9:15 am and the surgical nurses may be waiting for you with the gentleman in 216... but the time you spend opening your heart to those who need it is well spent. And sometimes, you'll find your heart heals a little bit when you do this, so make time for it.

19) Never stop looking for things to learn.

20) The little things in life really are the most important.

21) Save money and make smart financial choices. But every now and then you have my permission to buy that skirt/nail polish/purse that you don't actually need, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself.

22) Limit the amount of time you spend online. Facebook is great and all, but that evening stroll with your husband is even sweeter.

23) Learn to take responsibility for everything you do. Didn't take out the garbage this week? You're gonna have to haul it all out next week and deal with a stinky garage until then. Want to go back to school? You're gonna have to find the money to make that happen.

24) Learn to receive grace and learn to be graceful.

25) You are never too old to have fun. Don't take yourself too seriously. Make time to be silly and laugh until your belly hurts.

Our Marriage

A couple of weeks ago, I asked you guys what you'd like to see more of here at You.And.Me.Are.We and a couple of you wanted to see more posts on marriage. You want to get to know Trevor and I better and that's pretty darn cool!

I've written about our marriage before, so you will definitely want to read these posts as well. I promise they contain words of wisdom that you won't find in this post. They're worth reading!
Strengthen Your Relationship - Communication Tips
Words of Wisdom
Something I'm Proud Of
My Hunny, My Sweetie, My Valentine

He's a little run down on who we are and what our marriage is like:

Trevor and I met in high school {although, technically, we met when I was in 8th grade because I was friends with his younger sister and was at their house a few times - he didn't like me then because he didn't like ANY of his sister's friends} and officially started dating in 2005 when I was a junior and he was a senior. We had a handful of mutual friends and kind of stumbled upon each other... for whatever reason it just clicked.

Trevor went off to college that fall and I finished one semester of my senior year, graduated a semester early, and headed off to college myself. Incidentally, we both attended the same college. College was good and bad for our relationship; there were periods of time that we "cooled" it off when we were both busy as ever with school, but there was a year that we lived across the street from each other off campus and made it pretty easy to make dinner together.
Us at a friend's birthday party - this is from the early college years; 2006 or 2007, I think.
We look so young!
Trevor proposed in June 2010 - a year and a week before we said "I Do". Be on the lookout for our engagement story in the coming months {I've got a series in mind!}. We planned an intimate wedding for June 2011 and managed to host the most beautiful wedding I've ever been to - though I may be biased.

We had lived together for less than a year before we were married because Trevor's lease was up and he couldn't move home due to a new baby in the family. Our families never suggested we live together, but in order to save a great deal of money, it was agreed that we'd do it. I always had thought that living together before marriage may be useful because you could work any kinks out before heading to the altar. Trevor is the most easy-going person I know and we never found any big adjustment issues when he moved into my tiny one bedroom apartment.
On our honeymoon in Jamaica - June 2011
I didn't think that getting married would change a lot in our relationship - boy, was I wrong! It did change, and it changed for the better. I was completely elated to know that I was forever bonded with my best friend and that we'd worth our way through whatever was thrown our way. I loved him more than I thought I could. My love grew in ways I had never imagined and it positively changed the way I felt about my husband.
First anniversary dinner at the restaurant that catered our reception - June 2012

We haven't even been married for two years but we've been through our fair share. We are constantly struggling financially and still wanting to buy a house as soon as possible. We live as frugally as we can right now because Trevor is still looking for a job where he can use the degree he earned in December. I work to support us while going to school. We don't buy any extras and get as creative as we can with what we have. It's not a forever solution, but it is teaching us skills we will need to have if and when we run into similar issues later down the line.
At the cottage - August 2012
We've also learned we need to forgive each other - always. We cannot let issues in our lives take over the best thing that's happened to us {our marriage}. Forgive, forgive, forgive. And when you think you can't forgive any more, forgive again.

We've traveled together, we've cried together, we've jumped around in excitement together, we've changed together, we've sacrificed for each other, we've laughed till we pee our pants together, and best of all, we've loved each other.

Marriage is a wonderful, amazing bond to share.

If you're married, tell me about your marriage! If you're not, tell me what you're looking forward to most after you say "I Do".

questions for you, questions for me

I've been reflecting on my blogging habits lately - now that I've been on winter break and have actually had time to write! - and I realized there are a few things that need to be said. I have some questions for you about You.And.Me.Are.We and I am hoping that you have some questions for me, as well!

I have some really great readers - I mean really great - that read and comment on a regular basis. I've been replying to their comments via email as to encourage more of a conversation and to make sure they're notified of what I'm replying. Because I do have some regular commenters who are 'no reply' bloggers, if you have commented here before and not received a reply, chances are that you do not have your email address linked to your account. Don't worry, it's easily fixed! Leisha explains here how you can quickly change that. And if your issue is because your blogger account is connected to Google+, then you will want to check out this step-by-step to fix it from Kristina.

So first, how do you prefer I respond to comments? Should I continue emailing my responses? Should I start replying directly to the comment and risk you not seeing it?

Second, I want to hear what you like and dislike about YAMAW!
Should I do more tutorial posts? Cut back on the recipes? Host more giveaways?
Introduce more series? Talk more about my marriage? Talk less about nursing school?
Would you like to see more guest posts? Should I post more or less often?
What keeps you coming back for more?

And since I'm asking that of you, I'm hoping you'll ask me some questions, too! Are you curious to know more about our marriage? Nursing school? Life in Wisconsin? My habits? My likes and dislikes? Let me know! I enjoyed the vlog I did right after Christmas and I'm ready to do another. I'd like to collect a few questions from you to address during the vlog so pretty please leave some questions below!

I started You.And.Me.Are.We as a place to document our marriage and our life as newlyweds without kids. As with anything around here, I reserve the right to turn down your suggestion or skip over a question if I don't feel it's a good fit for this blog. However, you should know that I'm an incredibly open person and usually will try just about anything once {except bungee jumping}. So don't get freaked out about my disclosure; leave your question and suggestions anyway!

365 days to a better me

I don't "do" resolutions. Maybe it's because they're always broken before the month is through. Maybe because I don't think you need a start of a new year to try and make yourself "better".

What I am cool with is adding to my Goals page. Trying to be better inside and out. Holding myself accountable.

So, here's what I'm doing this year:

  • I need to take more time for myself. I get so caught up in helping other people and I find spending money on myself is sometimes hard to do.
  • I work 12+ hour shifts and purposefully dehydrate myself so that I don't have to go to the bathroom {because there's just no time to pee when you're a nurse!}. I am going to drink at least 2 hospital cups of water per shift - which is about 700mL... not the greatest, but still better than not drinking at all!
  • Take a vacation with Trevor before nursing school starts in October {if I get in!}. Jamaica would be our first choice, but depending on finances it may have to be something as simple as a weekend in Chicago.
  • Saving money. Trevor's working on finding a real world job now that he's done with school. We have student loans that we'd love to pay off, a $50K nursing program to {hopefully} pay for, a house to save for, a vacation to take and savings accounts to beef up!
  • Be healthier. I'm planning a post soon about my own version of clean{ish} eating this year but I'm also participating in this challenge to kick off the new year right. I love green smoothies, so I'm sticking with what I know and love!
  • Make more time for my husband. When he starts working regular hours, we won't be able to spend as much time together as we have these past couple of weeks and I'm going to miss it. We sacrificed our time together last semester but now that he's done with school we need to make our relationship more of a priority.
  • Finish this spring semester with a bang! I'm taking the last two classes before nursing school takes off and gets crazy hard and crazy busy. I'm going to make it count and learn as much about microbiology and biochemistry as possible.
  • Get into nursing school! This is out of my hands as I've already applied and the ball is rolling, but I'm keeping the faith alive that I will be getting an acceptance letter before June 1st.

You may see some follow up posts to this list, but because these are all personal standards I'm setting for myself, you also may not hear another peep about some of them. Stay tuned to see how the 7-Day Challenge goes!

How do you feel about resolutions? Do you love 'em? Hate 'em? Have you set any that are similar to the goals I've set?

BIG KAHUNA

Guys, I'm stressing.

I've mentioned it before, but I'll tell you again. There's this BIG test coming up - TOMORROW. And it's a make-or-break kind of test. I haven't been studying like I should have been. Blog World has been much more interesting than my study guides and books.

I know I've been vague up until now about this big kahuna test... but here's the scoop:

See, I'm working on getting into nursing school. I have to take this test {and pass} in order for me to submit my application in December. And then I have to take {and pass} another make-or-break test in January before I can be accepted.

The nursing program I'm applying to is the real deal, folks. As in, hundreds of people apply... and only thirty get in. It's a very unique program - the only one I've heard of it's kind in the country. I've been holding out on telling you because I'm not sure how it's going to turn out... but I figure if I'm going to be worried sick about it, I might as well be able to tell you what's up.

So this test tomorrow - I'll find out right away if I passed or not. If I pass, I can continue with the application and sign up for the next test. If I don't, I can't apply.
Make-or-break, dudes.

Please send me all the good vibes you have. Pray, toss salt over your shoulders, wish upon stars, whatever you do is appreciated!

I'd Like to Thank the Little People...

...oh, wait, I am the little people.

I recently woke up to news that I had been given an award by Carrie at Frugal Food Mama. I thought to myself "What in the world? A blogging award? Huh?" and quickly realized that they're a fun way to get to know the people behind the screen.

The way this award - The Liebster Award - works is that it is given to bloggers by bloggers to help show some recognition to smaller blogs (under 200 followers). When a blogger is given an award, they must answer 11 questions that have been given to them by the person who nominated them, come up with 11 random facts about themselves to share with everyone, nominate 11 other {small} blogs, and have those blogs answer 11 questions.

So let's get to it, shall we?

11 Random Facts About Me:
1) I hate, hate, HATE the feel of cotton being rubbed together or pulled apart. The feel of it is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Ugh, my teeth hurt just thinking about it right now.Fun story: when I was in 5th grade, we had to make haunted houses and to do so, we had to pull apart cotton balls to make spider webs. I couldn't do it, my teacher told somebody who told somebody who made me see a therapist... all they did at the therapist was brush my arms with a plastic brush and push me on a swing. Weirdest.Thing.Ever. My mom thought they were nuts and I never went back.
2) I don't like plain vanilla ice cream, but I do like vanilla bean ice cream.
3) I went to Montessori schools when I was younger and living in a large city. When my family moved to a small town, there were none available so I switched over to public school. I love Montessori schools and the philosophy behind them.
4) I have 2 college degrees and am using neither one in my current job at work. Fun times paying off those student loans!
5) I am working on applying to another bachelor's program. Am I crazy?
6) I had never met anyone named Trevor until I met my husband.
7) I hate driving. Especially if I have a long distance to travel.
8) The first time I flew on a plane, I flew to Paris. I think the length of that flight totally set the bar high and now I can do 4 hour flights no problem.
9) I've never smoked in my life. In fact, I've never been asked to smoke either.
10) I don't have a celebrity doppelganger but people literally stop me on the street and start talking to me like they know me - until they realize I don't know them. I get "You look so familiar!!" all.the.time.
11) I don't have a lot of really close friends but I am so protective of the ones that I do have. If you're my friend, I won't let people mess with you - I'll go all angry momma bear on them!

...are you still reading? Did I bore you? Wake up!

Here are the questions Carrie wrote for me to answer:
1.  If you could compete in any cooking/baking competition on television, which one would it be and why? Any of the baking competitions. I can bake a mean cake, but I don't enjoy cooking as much.
2.  Coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?  I love coffee drinks from Starbucks {hellllo Pumpkin Spice Latte, Peppermint Mocha, and Skinny Vanilla Late!} but I also enjoy warming up with a mug of hot chocolate when it's cold out {read: every darn day in Wisconsin from December 1st to February 28}
3.  If you could learn any new skill instantly by osmosis, what would it be? Languages. I'd love to be able to speak French, Spanish, Italian, Greek, and German. I tried learning Spanish from 7th grade until I graduated high school... but I kind of sucked. I want to be fluent!
4.  What is your favorite holiday? I really enjoy Christmas and the holiday season that surrounds it. I love getting together with family, decorating, baking, getting together with family, eating great food, giving gifts, and getting together with family.
5.  What do you think is the most eco-friendly thing that you do on a daily or weekly basis? We recycle every single thing that we can.We use low-energy light bulbs. We dry our laundry outside on the line if it's nice enough out. We combine shopping trips and errands. We use our resources wisely.
6.  What two things are ALWAYS in your pantry? Taco seasoning {because we take tacos seriously around here} and cereal {because Trevor and I both enjoy a big bowl of cereal with cold milk for breakfast}. I know milk doesn't go in the pantry, but if it did I would have said that. Before we got married, there were weeks that I went without milk. Now that I share a fridge with Mr. Milk Lover, we go through a gallon a week.
7.  If you could have just one super power for 24 hours, what would it be? Only for 24 hours? I'd have to say I would want to fly. That way I'd be able to see the whole world in a day and I could chase the sunrise. Wouldn't that be cool?
8.  Who is your favorite author? Jodi Picoult.
9.  What is the weirdest thing you have ever ate? I don't think I've eaten anything weird. I was a very picky kid and I've definitely expanded my tastes within the past 5 years... but I don't think anything weird has passed my lips. {Note: I also asked Trevor if he could think of anything weird that I've eaten and he looked at me like I had 6 heads, laughed, and basically said what I just told you.} I fail at this question.
10.  What is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery? A new car. Or pay off my student loans. Nothing exciting, we have too many practical things to wish for!
11.  Why do you blog? I started a blog because I wanted a place that we could return to and remember our newlywed, sans children, life. We're in no rush to grow up and have kids but we also want to savor the time we have. I find that blogging helps me find the little things in life to be excited and thankful about because I want to share it with all of you! I would imagine that once we have kids, this blog will be a great place for our family to come and get caught up on the little moments that happen so often in a baby's life.

I would love to nominate the following great girls:
Niki at Hello Paper Moon
Alli at Allena Mistral
Melissa from 53blonde
Abby at Pink Lemonade
Allie at This Yellow House
Amanda at We & Serendipity
Kassandra from Going Green with the Grizls
Lauren from Hippie Dog Company
Julie at Julie Unplugged
Stephanie at The Midwest Prep
Rachel at A Dash of Southern

Do me, them, and you a favor and check out their blogs!

Now, here are the questions that the ladies I've nominated will get to answer:
1) What's your favorite Olympic sport?
2) Tell us about the best day of your life.
3) Vanilla or Chocolate?
4) What's your favorite movie and why?
5) We all want to know, do you prefer boxers or briefs? {On your man, not you.}
6) If you knew you'd never eat again, what would you eat for your last meal?
7) Tell us about your proudest accomplishment.
8) Link us to your top 3 favorite blogs! And then tell us why you like them.
9) What do you do to relax?
10) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
11) What is your oldest memory?

I can't wait to see what they answer with :)

A big thanks to Carrie from the bottom of my heart for this award!

His and Her Q&A

Hey guys! We just got back from a short little vacation to visit some friends. I came home to about a hundred emails, 18 Facebook notifications, and a zillion blog posts that were posted by my favorite bloggers while I was away and enjoying time offline.

One of those blog posts was written by We & Serendipity and is freaking genius!
I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile as a way for us to remember this point in our lives and where we're at.

I'm not sure if I'm going to do this every Sunday because there are other linky parties that I post to on some Sundays but I'll start today and see how I feel next Sunday! Maybe I'll make it a Monday post or something to make it seem more manageable. We'll see.

Anyway, this genius post I'm talking about is a His and Her Q&A. The hosts post 10 questions that they've asked their husbands {and both husband & wife's responses} and invite everyone else to do the same and link up...

...so, here goes nothin'!

What will your firstborn daughters name be?
His: I don't think about baby names all the time! Eleanore.
Her: Eleanor, after my grandma... Ellie or Elle for short.

What is your biggest shopping pet peeve?
His: I hate when people wait until they're at the register to pay with a check. Either have it filled out as much as possible before you get to the checkout or use cash/debit/credit.
Her: I hate when I'm having a bad shopping day and nothing looks good on me. I hate it!

If you could have any single superpower what would it be and why?
His: Be able to fly; I just think it would be fun. And, to clarify, I would be able to take other people flying with me. (haha, I love that he considers these things!)
Her: To be able to read mind so nobody could keep secrets from me!

If you got a life-supply subscription to any magazine what magazine would you choose?
His: Motorcycle Classics, it's a well made magazine.
Her: Better Homes & Garden because it gives me inspiration to make my house look dreamy!

What was your favorite subject in elementary school (recess and lunch don't count)?
His:  Math or science. I can't quite remember, but reading and writing could not have been my favorite!
Her: Science. Always science!

You just scored $5. What do you spend it on?
His: A $5 footlong from Subway... I don't know, $5 isn't too much.
Her: Target. Target! TARGET!

What were your thoughts when you first met your other half?
His: I don't know - I just liked you.
Her: Man, he's cute!

If you could punch a company/business in the face who would you want to punch?
His: Subway, for taking all those subs off their $5 footlong menu (can you tell he enjoys his Subway?! Ha!)
Her: AT&T for not doing what they say they're going to do. It took two months to get freaking internet hooked up... and then we were billed wrong. Just get it right, kids, just get it right.

Favorite classic Disney princess?
His: I don't know - they're always just "the princess"... heck, just put down the mermaid lady.
Her: Pocahontas!

If you could reincarnate into any animal after you die what animal would you want to be?
His: Probably like a hawk or something because they have amazing vision!
Her: A dog, I think, because a lot of people treat their dogs better than their family members!

Asking these questions ended up being a fun way to spend a Sunday night {during commercial breaks from The Bachelorette, of course!} and I hope you enjoyed getting to know us just a little bit more. What do you think - should I make this a weekly thing?!

Career Options

Today is another day in the Summer Blogging Challenge! Here goes nothin'!

June 22 - When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

For the most part, when I was younger, I didn't change my mind too much about what I wanted to do with my life. I've totally made up for that now that I'm older, have two (unrelated) college degrees that I'm not using, have a small alphabet of letters after my name, and am planning on going back to school again!

My first career goal was to be an ambulance driver. I didn't want to be an EMT, didn't want to deal with the hurt people, but I just wanted to be able to drive fast and make traffic lights turn green for me!

My second, long-lasting career goal was to be a marine biologist. I even started looking at colleges when I was in middle school that are located in Hawaii and on the East Coast and have great marine biology programs - I was that passionate! In third grade, I would walk to the local library after school with a friend to read books about dolphins and whales and all sorts of marine life. We kept notebooks with all of the research we did. Bottom line: we were marine biology nerds.
Who wouldn't want to have this be their office?! (source)

I dreamed of swimming with the dolphins but never had the chance to. I dreamed of going on whale watching boats but we don't have those in Wisconsin. I dreamed of learning to scuba dive but I couldn't risk getting water in my ears.
So many reasons {excuses} why my passion fizzled.

I still love science and every career choice I've made up to this point has been science related. Guess that's the one constant in my hopes and dreams!

When I Was Young...

Ready or not, here's another Summer Blog Challenge post!

June 20 - Photo of you as a young child

Finding an acceptable picture for this post has proven to be quite difficult! I don't really have photos of myself from when I was younger than late middle school - and let's face it, the years from age 12 to about 17 are just super awkward and weird which means any photos I have from then are not in the least bit flattering. I scrounged around Facebook and found a little beauty I'd like to share with you today.

Can you find me? Eh? No? I'm the cutie with the braids and the semi-smile on the left! And, this is proof that I already had a double chin before I lost my baby teeth. *sigh* I think it's here to stay...

I believe I was 6 when this photo was taken - for sure not older than seven - and we were all at a friend's birthday party. Also, please note the phenomenal party dresses we were sporting! Children of the eighties :)

I still keep in touch with the adorable girl behind me who is giving us all a big hug {her name is Maya and she blogs at Charmingly Styled - and whose Facebook page the above photo came from} but I haven't spoken to the other two in almost 20 years. Man, that makes me feel old.

Anyway, at this point in my life I was just barely a big sister. My little brother is five and a half years younger than I am so he was still teeny tiny when this photo was taken. I was about to move away to a much smaller town and start public school. I was a little awkward (aren't we all?!) and had tons of energy.

Oh, how times have changed. Thinking back to my childhood has meant the return of memories long forgotten. How sweet it is, really, how sweet it is.

...Wait, who are you...?!

A little bit about myself!

I'm Sara, a 20-something woman living in Wisconsin with my husband, Trevor. Our one year anniversary is coming up in a little over a week - where did the past year go?! - but he and I have been together since high school. Basically we can't remember life without the other in it. Too cheesy? Sorry. It's true. We are both in school working on *kind of* second degrees and we also both work regular humdrum jobs - he in manufacturing, I in health care. We don't have any kids and are in no hurry to do so because we're enjoying our time together right now. We don't even have any pets which is really crappy! We talk about getting a dog all.of.the.time. but we're renting a house right now that doesn't allow any pets.

(the two of us in Jamaica on our honeymoon last summer)

I'm into all things DIY. I get into crafty moods and lose whole afternoons to making things I find on Pinterest. I love to experiment in the kitchen, too, especially if the recipe is healthy!

Trevor fixes up old Honda motorcycles in his spare time. We have a couple of them in the garage right now... but only one is ride-able ;) The other one is in pieces but hopefully he'll have 'er up and running by the end of this summer.

We enjoy travelling together even though it doesn't happen as often as we wish it would! We've taken a trip together at least once a year for the past 4 years and we really look forward to relaxing together. I love the process of travelling (packing, the anticipation, hanging out in airports, etc.) while Trevor loves the laying on the beach part :)
