Random Act of Kindness

July 17 - Write about a random act of kindness. - from Janelle at Domestically Seasoned

We've all heard about people paying for other people's coffee or highway tolls but I still don't think there's enough kindness in the world. Sure, they may have good intentions but I think sometimes people perform random acts of kindness in a selfish way {to make themselves feel good} rather than fully embracing the idea behind the act - being kind to strangers for no reason except to be kind!

Last Christmas Eve, Trevor and I ate lunch at a Chinese restaurant. I think we were en route to a family gathering after having just been at another. It just so happened that the Chinese place was one of the only places open!

It was a delicious meal and we were surprised at how busy the restaurant was! As we were getting ready to leave, an older couple came in and started eating. They were seated near us but kept to themselves. On our way out the door, I bought a gift certificate that covered their lunch. While Trevor went to pull the car up to the door, I dropped the gift certificate on their table, wished them a Merry Christmas, and left.

Now, I didn't do it to make me feel good - I did it to be kind - but it definitely made me feel like I brightened someone's holiday and maybe even inspired them to pass the kindness along.

Maybe, just maybe, I've inspired you to do something similar. Try paying for someone's newspaper, coffee, ice cream, or toll next time you pay for it yourself. It's a small price to pay for spreading kindness to others!

  1. Wow what a fantastic random act of kindness. I love doing a random act of kindness especially when someone is upset. I find it helps cheer up their day and inspire them to do the same for others. The best gift of all is not know what the other recipient is thinking. But you know they are smiling all the way.

  2. What a wonderful surprise for that couple! I'm sure you not only made the rest of their day, but they shared what you did with all their friends and family. Who knows how that inspired other people to do their own Random Act of Kindness...just because of what you did.

I came across that 366 Random Acts of Kindness also in writing the post for today. Lots of wonderful ideas on that blog representing so many lives who are being positively affected and changed.

  3. I don't think that you can perform a random act of kindness and not end up feeling good about yourself. ;) I mean, if you felt like crap after doing one then why would you do it again? lol. I think doing kindness & feeling good just go hand-in-hand.

  5. I love doing stuff like this for people. I think we just automatically feel good when we do something good for other people.

  6. How sweet!

I did address the same issue you mentioned about performing act out of selfishness versus actual kindness as well as renaming common courtesy as a random act of kindness!

Your act was truly random and kind!

  7. Once after my husband left me and my kids we were at McDonald's, playing in the awesome, temperature controlled playland there. The kids and I were sharing two very cheap sodas and I was primarily wondering what I was going to do: I had very little formula left for the baby and very little food left in the cupboard.

Somehow a woman overheard my kids talking and she bought both my girls a happy meal and gave me a $20. That was ten years ago and I can still see her face in my mind's eye.

I remember holding that bill and the first thought was, "Thank God I can buy some formula!"

Those were bleak times indeed and yes, I am so grateful now.

Your random act is precious. I need to start buying the food of the people behind me in drive throughs and such in memory of that woman's act of kindness for me. That would be fun.

  8. It's amazing how you can just bless someone's day by doing something little for them. It doesn't even have to be money related either! It's fun. :)

Your RAK is awesome. :) I bet you blessed that couple so much!
